Dyslexia and The Arts
Why would we be featuring a documentary on Dyslexia on the Character Driven Media site? The answer is very simple if you are a kid or have a child with learning issues or if you have been struggling with learning-related challenges as an adult.
These issues are not only related to the right-brained person who is often labelled as dyslexic or ADHD, but to all of us who have wondered all of our life about why it is that we don’t fit in to ‘normal’ society and why our way of looking at the world is so different…or unique. As a site dedicated to the creative mind, we know that there is a clear link between those who are often uncomfortable in a traditional learning environment and have felt like failures and those who are fortunate enough to figure out why that is; they are different in the most creative possible way!
Many of those who were fortunate enough to discover the Arts and other hands-on, process oriented outlets for our creativity and to be able to find ways of pursuing our interests outside the classroom. The classroom paradigm itself does not lend itself to the right brained world, which is why we have always chosen to work with kids outside the walls of the classroom in the areas of Theatre and Filmmaking. Our Character Driven hands on, project centred workshops allow young creators to be part of a real production team, using our unique principles that revolve around the idea of Adventure, Imagination and Honour from anywhere in the world.
Our philosophy is simple. We believe that the creative process and gifts, talents and abilities of right brained kids is best brought out when they are invested in the process, of their own accord, and they will expand their horizons and learn about their own learning style through a supportive, production-driven environment.
Adventure: Taking ourselves a little bit beyond our comfort zone to challenge our own abilties, ideas and to discover skills that we might not have otherwise know existed. This is done in a safe environment that allows us to stretch without being frustrated in our efforts.
Imagination: Problem solving is all about using our own ideas and putting them to the test. This can be true on an individual level as well as in a group environment where everyone’s input is valuable and where the unique differences between us are valued and utilized.
Honour: The age old concept of honour is something that is often lost when we are working together or even when we are on our own looking at the world around us. We encourage kids to honour each other’s ideas and input in the spirit of mutual understanding and growth, while at the same time honouring the craft as a whole and the process and equipment that goes into creating a collaborative production.
