character driven

Everything we need to know about character can be learned through the production process, whether it be on the stage, behind the scenes or in the tech booth. For the past two decades as we have introduced kids to theatre and filmmaking through hands on, experience-based workshops, encouraging and challenging participants to invest themselves in the process as they develop our three principles of character: honour, adventure and imagination.

Theatre and filmmaking are amazing opportunities for character building, both literally and in principle, however most folks have never had a chance to really experience the production process. They may have ‘put on a play’ or been cast in a role that they’d always hoped to perform, but unless they are immersed as part of a team of talent they have never really stretched themselves in terms of character. This distinction forms the basis not only of the workshop experience that we have developed, but of the difference between people who in their life do things out of a sense of duty rather than with a sense of purpose.

Think back to when you were given your first writing assignment in school which, for most kids is “what I did on my summer vacation”. It’s story or plot driven, and usually a pretty daunting task for the young writer who often has a hard time spelling, let alone putting together a riveting tale. The ‘finish this sentence’ type of story telling can be the very thing that turns a potential writer against the craft rather then causing them to be invested in the process, a vital component in any creative pursuit. Ironically, it’s usually the most imaginative and gifted of kids that are turned off by the entire school experience, the regimentation and lack of experience based opportunities. These are the ones that are usually standing in the hall or making regular visits to the principal or counsellor’s office if, in the end, they choose to be there at all. The most innovative of students can often be the most challenging in this setting which is no surprise when you realize that the intuitive and creative part of the mind, the right side of the brain, is left dormant in the highly regimented and linear world of the classroom, no matter how ostensibly progressive that environment might be.
